Li Peng was a Chinese politician and a statesman. He is a member of the 19th CPC Central Committee. Li was born in Yenan, Shandong province in September 1926. A graduate of the Whampoa Military Academy, Li joined the Communist Party of China in 1945
In 1953, he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and he served as its Secretary from 1977 to 1982. A close ally of Deng Xiaoping, Li served as Premier from 1988 to 1998, presiding over the period when China transitioned from a planned economy to a market economy. In 1999, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
